One of Muizenberg’s most prominent landmarks is in the throes of a total makeover – it’s being reborn as a luxury sectional title apartment building named Le Diamante. The complex, situated on the suburb’s beachfront “golden mile”, will offer a total of 39 one- and two-bedroomed apartments priced at between R795 000 and R1,895m inclusive of VAT.
Le Diamante, which is being marketed by Pam Golding Properties, lies on the border of Muizenberg and St James, just 70m from the water’s edge. Previously named South Sands, the building was more commonly referred to by locals as the Peppermint Palace due to its pastel green colour. The original section is thought to have been built as a hotel in the 1930s, with additional wings added in the early 1960s, but the building was allowed to fall into complete disrepair, and was auctioned off in August 2009 in a derelict state. But happily that sad portion of its history is now a distant memory as its new luxurious and sophisticated form emerges.
Leading architect and heritage expert Hanneke de Wet has spearheaded the redesign process, maintaining the original façade and many of the building’s original Art Deco features, including elaborate water features and feature windows. Once work is complete, the three-storey building will offer apartments ranging in size from 39sqm to 69sqm, all with either sea- or mountain views. Off-street parking will be provided behind the building, while a few street-level garages will be offered at an additional cost.
PGP’s Southern Suburbs Developments director Bev Bloch says Le Diamante will offer top-class finishes and numerous luxury features, including a gymnasium, sauna, and facilities for an on-site beautician. “There will also be an indoor heated pool as well as an outdoor lap pool,” she says, “plus a central lounge and entertainment areas. The complex will have its own conference facility which residents can use for private functions, and will be wired for internet and satellite TV connectivity. There will be 24-hour security with a full-time concierge who can be called upon to assist with everything from booking theatre tickets, to parking cars or arranging shopping deliveries. There will be lift access to every floor, and ample storage rooms provided for residents – a key necessity in this area, where surfboards and sea kayaks are so much a part of the daily lifestyle.”
PGP’s MD for the Western Cape metro region, Laurie Wener, says that after years of neglect, Muizenberg is now enjoying a re-birth as a trendy and chic suburb, ideally located for young professionals who enjoy watersports or for those who revel in magnificent sea views. “The entire Muizenberg beachfront has undergone a clean-up in recent years,” she says, “and there is a noticeable sense of rejuvenation in the suburb. Le Diamante is perfectly positioned to capitalise on this improvement, and will offer residents an enviable lifestyle where they can walk to the beach, the shops, local art galleries and theatres, and to public transport, making it easy to commute into town for work."
